// WHAT WE FIX

Everything nobody tells you about work

Competence gets you hired. Strategic navigation is what protects your sanity, salary, and position when dynamics get hostile.

Navigating org politics

Who actually decides things, how influence really flows, and how to get your work backed before the meeting starts.

Disagreeing with your manager

Push back on a bad technical call or an unfair deadline without sounding difficult or damaging trust.

Saying no (politely, and it sticks)

Scripts for scope creep, 'quick favours', weekend pings and the third project nobody asked you about.

Visibility with senior leadership

Turn 'I refactored the pipeline' into impact a VP remembers. Demos, updates and skip-levels that land.

Career talks with your manager

Ask for promotion, scope or a raise with evidence, timing and a plan instead of hoping it gets noticed.

Surviving (and exiting) a PIP

Calm, step-by-step plan: document, clarify criteria, negotiate, and decide when to fight or move on.

Fair Questions

Why can’t I just rely on AI for my Work Ick?
Typing your manager's name and your company's internal politics into a chatbot isn't private, personalized, or accountable to you. AI can give you generic options (uncustomized with one prompt at a time) which you want to hear, but it doesn't own your actual outcomes over time. More importantly, it won't push back when your read of a situation is off, or catch the thing you're not even asking about. A real coach does. That's where human experience matters! We bring experience dealing with people and messy workplace situations to help you spot patterns, understand the trade-offs, and help you decide what to say, what not to say, when to push, when to pause, and what move makes sense for you.
What is The Work Ick?
The Work Ick is 1:1 career coaching for early-career professionals dealing with the messy human side of work — from difficult managers and workplace politics to PIPs, promotions, visibility and salary conversations.
What makes The Work Ick different from traditional career coachings?
We don't give generic advice or tell you to “network more”. We work through your actual workplace situation, people, dynamics, and decisions. You leave with what to do, what to say, and how to handle such situations going forward.
I'm a junior professional. Is this too early for me?
Not at all. Learning how to manage expectations, push back constructively, and get credit for your work early in your career prevents years of stagnation and burnout.
What happens on the free call?
It is a 30-minute diagnostic session. You tell us your exact situation - a PIP, a bad manager relationship, or a promotion block — and we note down the details to frame a strategy to tackle your specific career situation.
I hate 'playing politics'. Is that what this is?
No. We define politics simply as understanding how decisions actually get made in your org. It's not about manipulation; it's about making sure your hard work is visible and valued by key stakeholders.
I'm on a PIP right now. Is it too late?
No. We immediately help you document clear deliverables, remove vague subjectivity, build proof of execution, and prepare your external leverage in parallel so you stay in control.
My manager is the problem. Can coaching actually help?
Yes. You can't change your manager's personality, but you can change the dynamic: written alignment, managing up, skip-level visibility, or a clean internal team transfer.
Will my company or manager find out?
Never. We operate under strict confidentiality. We never contact employers, connect to company tools, or share identifying details.
How do sessions work?
Planned 1:1 video calls, with timing decided mutually so it fits your work schedule. You get written notes and scripts after every session.
Is this technical interview or DSA prep?
No. There are plenty of places to grind LeetCode. We work on everything around the code: visibility, communication, disagreements, negotiation and career direction.
Do you do one-off sessions?
Yes. Single sessions for urgent situations like a PIP, a resignation, or a review conversation next week. Packages exist for longer-term growth.
I want a raise or promotion. What do I actually get here?
A brag doc that maps your work to your company's promotion criteria, a pre-wired plan with your manager and skip-level, and a rehearsed number conversation with a walk-away line.
What if I'm remote or work with a US or EU team?
That's a common case. Async visibility, timezone-shifted standups, and writing that lands without you being in the room are all things we work on directly.
How soon will I see a difference?
Most people leave the first session with one script they can use that week. Bigger shifts like visibility with leadership or a level change usually take one to two quarters of consistent reps.

Got a weird situation at work?

Bring one messy work situation. Leave with a clear next move. If we're a fit, we'll talk about ongoing sessions — if not, no hard feelings.
